This title might not be shocking to people and there is a reason for that. Over the past 10 years burnout rates have been increasing and are at all time highs with about 44 percent of workers reporting they feel burned out. Nearly 1 in 2 people feel burned out and yet it is a taboo subject. Employees and employers feel they are at fault if they are feeling burned out when in reality it is a rampant and systemic issue.

What Causes Burnout?

There are many different causes for burnout. It may be changing policies or management, increased workload, low compensation, emotionally taxing positions, or even emotional exhaustion in general. While there are many different causes, what it ultimately boils down to is being expected to do more than we presently have the mental or physical resources for.

How do I Know if I’m Burned Out?

There are a number of symptoms associated with burnout, some that may not feel connected but often are. These symptoms include:

  • Feeling drained and exhausted
  • Difficulty sleeping, or sleeping too much
  • Having emotional instability (feeling irritable, sad, or unable to feel)
  • Increasing alcohol or substance use
  • Feeling unable to cope with stress and emotions
  • Body aches
  • Getting sick more often
  • Consistently worrying

These symptoms are not exclusive to feelings of burn out, but can be indicators of burn out. If you’re feeling any of the above symptoms and suspect you may be feeling burned out from work, family/life stress, or other mental health conditions, it isn’t a fault of yours.
